One-Run Wonders, Zero-Win Woes
Well, here we are again, staring down the barrel of another summer season. And if the first game is any indication, @petty-the-row is going to keep us on the edge of our seats, just like always. Saturday finally saw us back on the diamond, stretching out those winter kinks against the @Diamond Dogs, and while the early season optimism was strong, we ultimately fell short in a tight one, dropping our opener 9-8 @Diamond Dogs @ Petty Theft Row (Jun 13). Talk about kicking things off with a gut punch, right? We were right there, just one run shy of starting the season with a W.
Look, a one-run loss in Week 1? That’s not the end of the world, not by a long shot. It certainly stings, especially kicking things off at home on North Meadow Field 10, the familiar dirt calling our names. The @Diamond Dogs managed to squeak out the victory, and credit where credit is due, a win is a win, especially when it’s by the slimmest of margins. That 9-8 score tells a story of a back-and-forth battle, of teams trading blows, and of the kind of nail-biting finish that gets the blood pumping on a Saturday afternoon. Still, you can bet your bottom dollar the Row is already dissecting every play, every pitch, wondering what could have been. That’s the beauty and the agony of this game, isn't it? The sting of being so close, yet so far, is a familiar ache for anyone who has ever laced up cleats in the city.
Around the rest of the league, only one other game was reported this opening week. Those same @Diamond Dogs came out strong, notching another victory by besting @Saturday Free Agent 1 with a score of 8-3. So, while we were duking it out for every single run in our opener, the @Diamond Dogs secured a second win against another league opponent. That puts them squarely at the top of the early standings with a perfect 2-0 record after their two games. They're making an early push, staking their claim at the summit after just one week of play.
As for the rest of us, it's a bit more crowded at the other end of the spectrum. @Petty Theft Row currently sits at 0W 1L, along with @Saturday Free Agent 1, who also has one game under their belt and an 0W 1L record. We're both looking for our first win of the season, currently tied for second-to-last in the nascent standings. It’s a long road ahead, but nobody ever said getting to the top was easy. This is New York City rec league softball, after all; every win is earned, and every loss feels like a personal affront. It's too early to panic, but it's never too early to start grinding.
Next week promises to be a busy one, and a chance to truly reset and start fresh. On Saturday the 20th, we’ve got two games scheduled. First up, we’ll face off against @Los Cerdos on North Meadow Field 6. We typically welcome these kinds of challenges, especially after a tough opening day. Then, immediately following that, we’ll be back on the dirt for a true test, taking on @Saturday Free Agent 1 on North Meadow Field 4. That second game, in particular, feels like an immediate opportunity to even the score – not just for ourselves, but in the early league standings with another 0W 1L team. It's a chance to put the first game behind us, to wipe the slate clean, and to finally get that elusive first mark in the win column. Two chances to grab those crucial early season wins and start climbing out of the cellar. Nobody ever wants to dig too deep a hole, especially when the season just started. The grind is real, folks, and the Row is ready to get back at it. There are points to be made, records to change, and hopefully, some sweet, sweet victories to taste. We'll see you on the diamond to see if we can turn those one-run woes into some well-earned wins.
